Fiction Workshop with Robert Gipe March 26
Fiction workshop with Robert Gipe
9 a.m. to 43p.m.
Saturday, March 26
Cost: $75This workshop will explore the connection between spoken and written language. Writers will have the chance to see how interview techniques, particularly those used by an oral-history driven community play-writing process in Appalachian Kentucky, can be translated into writing prompts and written pages. The workshop will focus on writing in the first person. After students generate writing during the workshop, there will probably be discussion about the pitfalls of phonetic spelling, thoughts on not sounding hokey, and waves of joy for writing in which the voice evokes realized and specific characters. Students should prepare by paying attention to the way people talk, particularly people who are in states of emotional upheaval and/or lying.
